Traveling 270,000 to the Moon or millions of miles to other solar system objects at great effort and expense just to plant a flag and gather a few samples over the course of a few days is an outdated and obsolete method of exploration of Solar System objects. With the advent of private space industry, no longer is the exploration of space limited to a few rich technologically endowed countries. SPACE1 is moving towards a permanent presence of space in the form of space tourism to a variety of places in space and time. Elon Musk's Spacex is building rockets in preparation to send permanent colonists to Mars for humans to become a multiplanetary species.
